Music meme

Here's a musical meme via Jason, at the Washington Interns Gone Bad blog has "sent" along. You pick 7 songs that you are currently into, and then, if you like, a YouTube link. This is really hard for me to narrow down, because i'm always into way more than 7 songs, but I'll do my best!

1. Parentheses: The Blow
I've been listening to this song for ages. it's been played 43 times on my computer alone, lord knows how many times I've played it on my iPod.

"Parentheses"

2. Gene Autry- Beulah
I've posted this before, but Beulah is such a great band, they deserve all the glory that they can get. The only regret I have is that they are defunct. They are still in regular rotation in my jukebox though, because the sound is so good and fresh, quality is like that. "Mean, mean Gene's got a beautiful voice. He carries me home on his beautiful horse."

"Gene Autry"

3. Mercy, Mercy ,Mercy- Cannonball Adderley Quintet
Oh, it's just fabulous.

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"

4.Little Bit of Feel Good - Jamie Lidell
Jamie Lidell knocked my socks off last week during his live show at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco. His vocal chops are off the wall, he sounds amazing live, and does amazing things with a synthesizer and his voice. If you have the opportunity to check him out DO NOT PASS IT UP! His band was especially tight, and they were really fun to see. One of the best shows I've seen in a long while.

"Little Bit Of Feel Good"

5. Again & Again- The Bird and The Bee
Groovilicious

"Again & Again"

6. Right As Rain - Adele
This young lady recorded this album when she was 19. WTF? When I was nineteen I was just up to no good. To have made a lasting contribution to the musical world, that would have never occurred to me, nor would it have been possible ( I can't sing, I only think I can when I play Rock Band).

"Right As Rain"

7. Political Science- Randy Newman
Ahh, A favorite ever since childhood, this never gets old. Randy Newman is a national treasure. Somehow, there are still people who don't get the sarcasm of "Short People", but F' em! Randy sounds as good as he did when he was young, keep 'em coming, man.

Ridiculous

I'm in love with Adele Adkins, and last night she played at Bimbo's 365 Club, which is my very favorite venue, ever. It opened in 1931 at 365 Market Street . In 1951 the club moved to Columbus Street, where it remains today. It's an intimate venue, with cool topless mermaid artwork and touches like old school bathrooms complete with an attendant on the weekend. She'll have anything you could possibly need for a touch-up, nail polish, deodorant, hair products, lotion, sewing stuff. Gauche girls go in and don't even leave a tip, even after the attendant graciously hands them towels to dry their ingrate hands after they wash. They're usually the loudest, the drunk ones who want to crowd into a stall together.

This is Dolfina, who is somewhat the Bimbo's mascot, she's on all of the cocktail napkins, cool right? I love how retro they are, except I believe the same napkins have been in use for years and years, so I don't know if that really qualifies as "retro".

So, on Monday I found out Adele was playing at Bimbo's on Thursday (yesterday) and I immediately called my friend Hollis, who is a freak for her too, knowing that he would be down for going to the show, but of course it was sold out. I was pretty sad, because she is just ridiculously amazing live, and the fact that she is so popular and talented means she will never again play a venue as small and intimate as Bimbo's. My only consolation is that next week I'm going to see the amazing Jamie Lidell there, and I am so going to put on my groove shoes for that!

Everybody likes unicorns, don't they?

So I shall give one to you! It's kind of a anthropomorphized one, which is a bit My Little Ponyish, but whatev. I never got into unicorns, or horses, or ponies, and I was too old for My Little Pony. That was all my sister's action. Me, I was all about the books, and Barbie, for way too long. I don't know what the deal was with that. My sister and I just used to trash them, except for one, we would always have one good Barbie each.

Our cousin came to visit one time and fell apart because of the fact that we didn't have enough good ones for her to play with. We'd chopped the hair off the rest, or tried to dye their hair with that temporary hair dye-in-a-mousse, or did their make-up very poorly with pens, stuff like that. They were all very ratty indeed, and I'm sure we'd had no plans at all to share the two good ones. Camille, though cried foul, and said "You never have a good Barbie for me to play with!". It's one of those childhood moments that I remember quite vividly, because Camille was always just hangin' tight, so this must've been an issue that really chafed. I really hope that my sister or I let Camille play with a nice Barbie, but I don't know. Unfortunately little girls aren't all unicorns and rainbows, they often are sharp little teeth and scratchy fingernails.

Jamie Lidell's unicorn, while a little odd (it's a unicorn / human hybrid) gets to have a cool serenade, and that's groovy, so I don't mind adding this particular unicorn to my "likes" list. Lidell and the unicorn have some fun interactions, most definitely! I am a fan of Lidell's previous release, and if this is what the rest of the tracks off of his new album, JIM, are going to be like, it could end up being an album that I really might end up liking a lot.
