Oh my, I'm taking a gamble and moving over to Word Press. So far everything there is so EASY! More options, prettier layouts, easier to use. It took about 10 minutes to import my blog from here. I do have to go back and redo all my video because WP uses URLs, not all the code that is needed for blogger, so that's a bit of a pain. Oh, and my blogroll, don't feel slighted if it takes me a few days to get you moved! I'd be really happy if you updated your blogrolls to my new address- http://arollerskatingjam.wordpress.com. I'm not going to delete this baby yet, and will keep it active for a while so that I can make sure everyone finds me over at my new digs, especially since I haven't been so good at posting lately. I think the change of scenery will do me good! Come visit!

Isn't this a great idea? I used to do something similar when I had a hole along the cuff of an old sweatshirt. When it's cold out and your hands are freezing you roll down the cuffs of your Handcuffs sweatshirt and slide your hands in like fingerless gloves. One of my resolutions in the New Year, besides trying to get out of the writers block I've had (serious lack of any sort of inspiration), is to read a whole lot more. I will be doing that in one regard, since I'll be taking a technical course at school again, but I've been slacking off in the pleasure reading category as well. I intend to find some really great pleasure reads. I was perusing several lists I garnered from the NPR website, and was excited to find several good prospects. Do you have any great books to recommend?

Remember others at this time of year that are not as fortunate as we are. Food banks are hurting at this time, especially now that we are in a recession. Monetary gifts, even small ones are much appreciated at food banks since they can purchase 5 times the amount of food that you can. Wow! The other banks that need your help during the holiday season are blood banks. The holiday season typically sees a shortage of supply at blood banks and if you take a little time donate blood or platelets (much needed, ask about it,the process - apheresis, is much like a regular blood donation) you just may save someone's LIFE, how's that for a wonderful holiday feeling? It doesn't cost you a thing, and they give you free snacks too!

If My Dad Owned A Bike Store

If my dad owned a bike store, this could be the sign. My first bike was a Schwinn, and lord was it ugly. I didn't get my very first bike until I was pretty old. I'm a middle child and I got lost in the sauce there. I didn't even know how to ride a bike until I was in the 4th grade. No one taught me how, I had to figure it out on my own, and when I finally did, nobody even noticed that I had finally gotten around to it. My mom drove right past me in her car when I was on my inaugural ride around the block on my little sisters bike. I saw her and then my knees hit the handlebars because my legs were too long, causing me to fall and sprain my wrist.

When I had saved enough money to buy a bike, I wanted a mountain bike. I grew up in Marin, home of off-road cycling, and trail bikes were all the rage. I ended up with a cheesy Schwinn imitation of a mountain bike, red with hideous white handlebar grips and brake lines, the kind that turned very dirty with use. I had to wear a red and white bike helmet that made me look like a gigantic toadstool. Glamorous I was not. I had that bike for years and eventually I left it at my boyfriend's cousin's apartment where it disappeared. My dad, Pat, never let me forget it.

This is a great collaboration featuring the always awesome David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal, and it comes from the clever musical mind of Brighton's Big Beat master Fatboy Slim. He's working under the name of the Brighton Port Authority and the new album will include collaborations with artists Lateef, Martha Wainwright, Iggy Pop, Pete York, Jack Penate and many others. I can't wait to hear the rest.

This video was recommended to me by YouTube, and I had actually never seen it. I love this song, it's still just as beautiful as it was the first time I heard it. But, as I was watching it I was struck by how much our lives are influenced by technology, bits and bytes, zeros and ones. Computers influence so much of our interactions, and I can go a year without seeing friends who live less than 40 miles away because emails and phone calls substitute for real visits. I want more of the real thing!

Bike Around My Town

This commercial makes me want to go out and find a spiffy bike just like the one everybody shares in this Kaiser Permanente commercial. The very first time I saw the ad I was captivated by the concept of people passing off the bike to each other. It reminded me of the community bikes in Amsterdam, and it has such a delightful song that is perfectly suited for the commercial, I was in love! Imagine my delight when I realized that the last few moments of it were filmed right around the corner from my home! It's the part (0:50-1:00) where the white haired man rounds a corner and rides toward a tunnel, that's Point Richmond! Conneticut Gets It

The Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled that it gay marriage is legal. There will be no appeal. Beginning October 28th marriages between gays and lesbians will commence. Connecticut joins Massachusetts and California in recognizing marriages between gays and lesbians. Hooray! I hope that this is a sign of better days to come. Congratulations Connecticut!

Other favorites like Iced Molasses, and Flaky Flix are bound to disappear fast too. I hope some Fairy Godperson appears and saves this institution. What will life be like if I have children who never know the pleasures of the pink and white icing of Circus Animals and the delicious vitaminy crunch of the colorful candy sprinkles atop? Blasphemy. Aren't these notebooks super? I saw them at one of my favorite stores, Fig Garden, in San Anselmo, and knew I had to get them. Luckily I didn't have to make a choice between the two of them because who can decide between a proud peacock and a cute bird perched over delectable cherries? Not I. The decision making is already taken care of for you, they come in an alluring $5 two-pack. They are made by the French Paper Company. All of the paper is manufactured with 100% green hydropower and no petroleum products. I can get behind that! They offer many other paper and gift products. I have only begun to scratch the surface of their website, and have added it to my blogroll because it is so chock full of wonders.

Did anyone let you in on my notebook addiction? I love well designed notebooks. The ~~secret~~ pocket and last tear out pages in Moleskines, genius. Campus Wide notebooks, with "the best ruled foolscap suitable for writing." I have to agree there. It's the smoothest paper ever, a veritable delight to write upon, especially with a Uniball Jetstream pen, a match made in heaven for Campus Wide paper. Jetstream pens are like a miracle, people think I'm talking a lot of hot air until they use my pen, and then they are complete converts. Go and try one yourself. Don't try to take mine, I'm watching you. And I keep notes.

The New York Times published a wonderful article about how the blogosphere has come together to support the Nielson family following the plane crash that has left Stephanie and Christian Nielson in critical condition. It focuses on how the Nie Nie Dialogues is so much fun to read because Stephanie takes so much pleasure in being a wife and mother, and that she does it in an effortless yet accessible way. This is one of the reasons that she has so many faithful readers who feel as if they actually know her, and explains why there has been such a massive outpouring of support from all over the world. I love traditional Japanese art forms, and Masami Teraoka uses traditional art styles but throws in a modern twist, with exceptional wit.

I love the bright colors used in this work and the inclusion of traditional clothing such as the kimono and geta.

I don't know the name of this piece, but just adore all of the different textures, All the different patterns and the woman's long tongue lapping up the noodles are fabulous.

Shine A Light

It has been spectacularly hot the last few days. You know it's so when San Francisco sees fully sunny skies and the thermometer reaches 70 before 9 am. On days like these I wonder if the tourists know how truly lucky they are, especially when walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. Even on a fairly warm day in the city, the bridge can be swathed in cold fog, necessitating very warm clothes. Most tourists don't know this, and I have seen many a shivering soul walking across it. If you ever plan a trip out to the Bay Area, late August, September and early October often are our best weather times, warm to hot, less fog, and plenty of opportunities to see our attractions in their best light.

This picture reminded me of the kind of bugs that flit about on warm nights. It makes me miss the humid, hot nights that I experienced when I lived in New York and during my visits to Chicago. There are no fireflies to delight in on the west coast. It's a true Midwest and East coast experience, and what a thrilling one for someone who has never had the pleasure of watching those glorious bugs do their dance.

P.s I'm still looking for a FFFFound invitation, and as promised I will make a package of goodies for whomever is so kindhearted!

I'm a Fashionaire

Look at my "new" luggage! It was my mother-in-law's, and she gave it to me for my birthday! It's definitely one of the coolest things ever! There is actually a third bag, a carry on toiletry bag that I got too! It sort of resembles a bowling bag. It's cool because it is lined with the orange fabric and then again with clear vinyl so that it is spill-proof inside. Very cool! Apparently MIL has another one stashed away , and that one even has a snap-in make-up bag in it! How stoked am I? She even had the keys for the luggage!

Here's a close-up of the incredible pattern. Samsonite debuted this pattern in 1968. My MIL thinks she bought her set in 1975. It has been all over the world. Last year Samsonite re-released the Fashionaire line as a limited edition in this exact pattern, under their exclusive Black label. It has been updated with modern touches like in-line wheels and extending handles. I'm sure the luggage is much lighter too. This stuff is hernia inducing when filled! I'm planning on using them as design pieces in my home.

Target hits a cosmetics trifecta!

While at Target last night I was really happy to see that they are carrying a new line of makeup from model Jemma Kidd called JK Jemma Kidd. It was hard to miss in it's vibrant , bright pink packaging. There aren't any images on their website as of yet. Prices start at $14 for eyeliner, and go up to $36 for eyeshadow compacts. Kidd has a well established cosmetics line in the UK.

A while back I posted about Sephora marking down all of their Napoleon Perdis makeup for what I correctly assumed was final sale. Well, it seems that their reason for doing so is that Perdis signed a contract to create a line for Target, as well as having some freestanding concept stores.

Last in the lineup will be Pixi products from Petra Strand. This is the one brand that I have yet to try. The prices will range from $12-39. With the advent of cosmetic superstores such as Sephora and Ulta, high end cosmetics have become more accessible, and more and more people are trying products that they previously would have simply read about in magazines. I think that Target is making a smart move by working with companies like this, they build a stronger client base. I know that as of late I have done more shopping there than ever before. I have bought a whole fall wardrobe there, and if I didn't have to go to a separate store for nice cosmetics, I'd be thrilled.

I made popovers last night because they're divine and I had all the ingredients.(There are only five: eggs,milk,flour,salt and butter.) The recipe was for 6 popovers, but somehow there was enough batter for 7. I live in a two person household. One lovely lady ate four, and a certain gentleman had to be satisfied with three. What a sucker! While eating them (along with some mini ravioli, I admit, it was a decadently dairy meal), we guffawed while watching a hilarious episode of Tim and Eric Awesome Show. Have you watched? It's wickedly funny, superbly weird, and wrong in all the right ways. I can't believe I just recently discovered it. You can stream episodes online at Adult Swim, so you should do it, but not at work, unless your work is really ultra cool.

Can you believe the color of those eyes? I guess that's what they mean when they talk of "limpid pools". Such a stunning color of blue, it's almost unreal.

I love these tiles. They adorn a storefront but since they are below knee-level I wonder how many people actually even notice them.

Pardon the poor photography skills, my hands were shaking, and I didn't have a tripod. More gorgeous detailing.

Cool old neon signs. These are for the Spot Liquor Store and Bar. Interesting clientele, but delicious hot dogs, or Spot Dogs, if you will. They have a reputation. Point Richmond is home to the Chevron Refinery and it's multitudes of employees so it's food establishments do quite a lot of breakfast and lunch business. There is also a major trainyard that sees a lot of 24 hour action right next to the Spot, so it gets a lot of business during all hours of operation.

I love the look of these old signs with the rust stains, but original look still mostly intact.

I just liked the looks of this forlorn chair and ottoman in the late afternoon sun.

Walkin' Around

I took a walk around town last evening. My initial reason was to take a photo of this truck. I love it's colors and the simplicity of the logo. It's always parked right in the same spot.

The Hotel Mac has been open for ages. Since 1911 in fact. It is listed in the National Registry of Historic places. They happen to have a wonderful bar, and I can recommend the steak. I am often tempted by the delicious aromas that waft from their kitchen when my sliding glass doors are open. They are about a minutes walk away. This is what I love about living in Pt.Richmond, a small community with a picturesque downtown and the kind of neighborly feel that goes with it. (Sometimes you forget that we really are a part of crimeridden Richmond, CA, it really can seem worlds away)

One of the last of the roses growing in the town park. This beauty was amazingly fragrant. The rose bushes have been growing for 20+ years.

Hello darling! I bought this lil' Botkier for Target clutch for myself on my birthday. At $19.99 it was a deal I couldn't pass up. It has a little phone pouch and a zippered pocket inside too, so I can stay marginally organized.

This baby is the same unbeatable price, but more of an everyday tote. You can't tell from the picture, but it is much larger than the clutch. I could fit two loaves of bread in it, easily. It cinches at the top, but also has a magnetic clasp for extra security. Phone pocket, and a zippered one too, but other than that, it's bottomless, so I'll need to use a make-up bag and try to keep it simple. I love it. It comes in two other patterns as well, but this one was my fave.

Oh, BTW, was totally excited to read over at Richie Design today that Alexander McQueen is in talks with Target. Could he be a possible successor to Mizrahi? How fantabulous would that be?

Shut yo Mouth! The legendary Isaac Hayes died this afternoon. Hayes would have been 66 on August 20th. He was found by a family member next to his treadmill, unresponsive, and died an hour later. He was one of music's true greats, and also made memorable contributions to Southpark as the lovable character Chef.

The "Theme from Shaft" won an Oscar for Best Original Song (the first Oscar won by an African American in a non- acting category) the song and score later winning two Grammys.

God, I love Gnarls Barkley. Cee-Lo Green's voice is undeniably powerful, but in this song, it's turned down low and used to haunting effect, with Danger Mouse's slow, sweet beats behind it. The video might make some a bit squeamish, but it's like a short film, and the actors are used well, their emotions are both funny and heartbreaking. The special effects? Well, they're simply special, and when you have a heart that is anthropomorphized to look like Cee-Lo, singing into broccoli microphone, it's all good, as they say.

Read this awesome Craigslist post, it made my day. I just came away from it amazed by the author's optimism and lack of animosity following his experience. I think he should have received a better grade for his paper, his mechanics might not have been perfect, but his storytelling is wonderful. Brian noticed these lamps a couple of weekends ago at Target, and I actually really like them. It's pretty cool that you can place a book or two on each shelf. The lamp takes a 150 watt bulb, so there should be plenty of light for reading. I'm looking forward to actually going back and getting them, I think that they will make our room look much more unified, and clean. later on, if we go with a different look (we don't have a bedroom set or anything, just some random furniture), we can put the lamps in say, the living room, or a guest bedroom, and they'll still look cool.

They also come in brown wood, which is what I would choose, black is too "single guy" for my taste.

Cool Summer Treats

Summer means cool treats, and none more delicious than ice cream. One of my current favorites is the Triple Chocolate Drumstick. When I was a child we always got our ice cream at Swensen's, a Bay Area original. The first shop was opened by Earle Swensen at Hyde and Union Streets atop Russian Hill, in San Francisco in 1948, and is still there today. We went to the local shop in San Anselmo with the 60 cents my mother gave us each week and bought a kiddie cone. One scoop chosen from the 160 flavors, always on a sugar cone. We were never allowed to get bubble gum, because of the gumballs. I lusted after bubblegum, of course. Once I got black licorice. As I recall, it was heady, delicious, and extremely messy. No doubt, not very many people would've agreed, and certainly not very many kids.

One lucky day my brother and I hit the ice cream jackpot. The teen aged girl behind the counter though we were cute, and told us that for our $.60 we could each have a dish of all the chocolate flavors. We were in frozen dairy heaven. My mom must've died when we came home, crowing about our grand luck. She was a sugar Nazi, and the weekly ice cream was her one concession. We always hoped that our luck would repeat, but it only happened that once. Later on, when I played softball, I ended up on a team that was sponsored by Swensen's. At the beginning, they told us that after a win, the team could come in for ice cream. I'm not sure if they ended up regretting this, or if it turned out to be a great promotion, because our team ended up being undefeated that year. (I assure you I had not much to do with the teams success, I was certainly one of the most lackadaisical right fielders known to modern history.) Yet,
once again, I ended up in a sort of dessert eden. Ahh, youth.

Bowl of Tears

You may have noticed, if you've been reading my blog for a while, that I've been trying to expand the focus of my posting to include more subject matter. Music is one of my true loves, but I also am a huge admirer of art and all things beautiful and creative. So, in a general way, I am trying to make these things more present in my day to day life by searching them out. Including it all in my blog is a natural extension. I am having a lot of fun with it, and I hope that you, who read my blog, enjoy it too.

The Knife, brother and sister Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson, are from Sweden. The moody interiors of the mouse house are the perfect backdrop for the haunting effect of their vocals. This video for Marble House, by Chris Hopewell, is so gorgeously done. I can't even imagine how long it must have taken. All the tiny details make this something that needs several viewings in order to appreciate the craftwork.

I love his palette, the colors are calm. I'd put any of his work on my walls. You could look and look at his work and keep finding new stuff.

This installation is so wonderfully diverse. I love the mural on the wall, and all the different sized paintings hanging on it, the whole thing together is just amazing. I hope that it was sold as one piece.

One day, one lucky day, perhaps I can have one of his works. He's a skateboarder too. Now you know he's supa-dupa cool.
